The SMART Train (Sonoma–Marin Area Rail Transit) is the North Bay's passenger rail system connecting Sonoma County and Marin County along a 48-mile corridor from Windsor in the north to Larkspur in the south β€” where you can catch a ferry straight to San Francisco.

For Santa Rosa residents and visitors, SMART is the smart way to beat Highway 101 gridlock. Whether you're commuting to the office, heading to a winery in Petaluma, or catching a Golden Gate Ferry into the city, the SMART Train puts Sonoma County in motion β€” car-free.

Trains run from roughly 4 a.m. to 10 p.m., with peak-hour service every 30 minutes in both directions. Every two-car train seats up to 158 passengers, fits 24 bicycles, and offers free Wi-Fi, a snack bar, and accessible restrooms.

πŸš‚ What's Coming Next for SMART

SMART's expansion plans are well underway. A nine-mile extension to Healdsburg is scheduled to open in 2028, bringing the rail line deeper into Sonoma County wine country. The long-term vision extends the system all the way to Cloverdale β€” though that final segment remains planned but unfunded as of 2026.

Additional infill stations within Santa Rosa are also under study for the future, which could further improve local access. The full build-out would create a 70-mile passenger rail corridor from Cloverdale to the Larkspur Ferry, connecting the entire Wine Country corridor by train.
